A customer is always on the lookout for the best deal, including when shopping for an animated explainer video. Unfortunately, this usually means going for the vendor who offers the lowest price. While it is necessary to consider the financial aspects, the other side of the equation, value, is often neglected. Hence, while the customer may get a ‘great’ deal, the downside far outweighs any benefits derived from the low pricing.

Let’s take a look at all the components that go into creating an animated explainer video. Please note that all these steps take time, patience, creativity, and expertise.

Script: The script writing should be top notch for it to translate into a great video.

Voiceover: The voiceover should be done by a professional artist in a proper recording studio.

Storyboard: The storyboard should properly capture the flow of the video in static images.

Artwork: The artwork should be original to ensure the customer’s brand essence is captured.

Animation: The animation should ensure that the video meets its communication objective.

Music: The music should complement the visuals/voiceover and should be licensed and royalty-free.

When a vendor offers an animated explainer video at an unrealistic price, you can be sure they are either compromising on one or more of the steps mentioned above. For instance, they may not spend enough time on the scripting or use stock elements/images instead of creating original artwork or use background music which is not properly licensed.

So how much does an animated explainer video cost? Our research indicates that a 2D animated explainer video for online usage (broadcast usage requires more expensive licenses) is priced anywhere from US$100 to US$10,000 per minute. Yes, you read that right. The vast range is also perhaps a key reason why there is so much confusion when it comes to pricing.

Our experience shows that a 2D animated explainer video priced less that US$500 per minute is usually poorly made. It’s simply not possible to dedicate sufficient resources to create a high quality 2D animated explainer video at anything less than this price point. The result. The customer ends up with a video which cannot meet its communication objective. In other words, it’s completely useless, and the customer has to spend again to get another video made.

On the other hand, we also strongly feel that simply charging more is not an indicator of better quality. What we mean by this is that beyond a certain threshold price, the quality essentially remains the same. There are some vendors out there who charge higher because they have been around longer or have achieved brand recognition or simply because they can. This once again does not work out beneficially for customers.

At Reptile FX Animation Studio, we feel a price range of US$500 to US$1,500 per minute is the ideal pricing range for a high quality 2D animated explainer video (online usage) that is engaging as well as effective. This price range is not only affordable for customers but more importantly, offers a solid return on investment, especially because we focus on creating amazing animated explainer videos that meet their communication objectives.
